Answers to Life’s Test

Years ago, a series of symbols came to me through meditation, one each day for five days.

I had a hard time remembering them, so I tattooed them on the inside of my forearm.

At the time, I thought I was writing down answers.

Not answers to a specific question.

Answers to a recurring test, life’s test.

The longer I live, the more convinced I become that life asks the same questions repeatedly.

The circumstances change.

The people change.

The location changes.

The stakes change.

But the questions remain remarkably consistent.

Can you stay balanced when things become chaotic?

Can you concentrate when distractions multiply?

Can you maintain your energy without burning yourself out?

Can you remain detached enough to let go of what no longer serves you?

Can you find strength when things don’t go according to plan?

I originally thought these were separate skills.

Now I see them as a system.

A framework.

A set of answers that continue to work regardless of the situation.

Balance.

Concentration.

Energy.

Detachment.

Strength.

All simple words.

But at times, difficult to practice.

The interesting thing about life is that it rarely announces the test before giving it.

You don’t wake up in the morning and receive a “pop quiz” memo.

Instead, it arrives one at a time or all at once, disguised as:

A difficult conversation.

A missed opportunity.

A business decision.

A relationship.

A creative block.

A delayed flight.

An illness.

A sudden success.

Most of us spend our lives trying to solve the individual problems.

I’ve become more interested in mastering the answers.

Because once the answers become part of who you are, the questions lose some of their power.

The test still arrives.

But you recognize it.

You know what it’s asking.

And eventually, you know how to respond.

That tattoo wasn’t a declaration.

It’s a cheat code.

A reminder that while I can’t control every circumstance life places in front of me, I can control how I meet it.

Balance.

Concentration.

Energy.

Detachment.

Strength.

So far, they’ve answered every important question life has asked.

I suspect they’ll answer the next ones too.
